Standing on BiasBreak

Standing is not awarded and it is not kept. It is read off the public record every night, and it is held only while the record supports it.

Contributor

  • Hold an account on BiasBreak.

Fact Checker

  • 3 checks published after editorial review.
  • No unresolved factual error outstanding — no reader-raised correction awaiting an editorial decision on any published check.

How it is worked out

  • Recalculated nightly from published checks and the editorial record. Nothing here is set by hand.
  • A rung is lost as soon as its conditions stop being met, and returns on its own when they are met again. Nobody has to ask.
  • The date a rung was first earned is kept even if the rung is later lost and regained. It is a fact about the record, not about a streak.

What an unresolved factual error means

One specific thing: a reader has raised a correction against one of the contributor's published checks, and no editor has yet ruled on it. It is outstanding because nobody has decided, and it clears the moment somebody does — whichever way they decide.

A correction that has already been accepted is not an unresolved error, and it does not count against anyone. A contributor publishes, a reader improves it, an editor accepts the improvement: that is the system working. Charging someone their standing for it would teach everybody to resist being corrected.
